IntelliBoard enhances the tracking of time spent within Learning Management Systems (LMS) by leveraging both LMS-provided data and IntelliBoard’s advanced tracking capabilities. Here’s how time spent is calculated across different platforms:
Canvas
Canvas tracks time spent as the duration of time how much time learners spend viewing pages in a course. Only page views lasting 2 minutes or longer are included to ensure the data reflects meaningful engagement. Canvas tracks intermediate page requests such as navigating to a different page in the course, clicking links, or submitting assignments. This means that passive interactions, such as watching a 30 minute recorded lecture, are not tracked.IntelliBoard uses Canvas' time spent datapoints for their datasetsin a course using two methods, and IntelliBoard uses these same methods to provide clear insights into learner engagement.
The first method, Total Activity, measures the overall time a learner spends navigating a course. It counts time spent viewing course content if it lasts longer than two minutes. If the time between actions (like clicking a link or moving to another page) is less than ten minutes, all the time in between is included. However, it doesn’t count group activities or time spent watching videos unless there are interactions, like clicking during the video. This is a big-picture way to see how long learners are active in a course, and you can find it in Builder in IntelliBoard under the Enrollment Category.

The second method, Time Spent by Page Views, tracks how much time learners actively interact with individual pages or activities. It calculates time based on actions like clicking the mouse or typing on the keyboard. Time is recorded in chunks, starting at 10 seconds and capping at 5 minutes unless there’s another interaction. This gives a detailed view of how much time learners spend engaging with specific course content. You can find this data in Builder in IntelliBoard under the User Tracking Total Category.
Moodle
Moodle tracks time spent as the duration of time from when a learner enters and leaves an activity. It cannot detect if the learner takes a break or stops interacting during that time. Moodle’s Statistics feature, when enabled, can provide total page views to pages in courses but does not distinguish between users or provide unique user counts.
